Autumn, and at the same time the season perfect for hiking in the mountains, is just around the corner. Mild temperatures, colorful forests and often already snow-covered peaks promise a beautiful panorama. But there is also a catch: the weather in autumn is often extremely changeable and can become a challenge for hikers.
But with our autumn hiking tips you are also well prepared for changeable conditions:
Choose the right tour
The right tour planning is especially important in autumn, because often there is snow in higher altitudes already at the beginning of September. If you want to be on the safe side, it’s best to plan tours that don’t go so high, or pick a route with south-facing climbs.
The right timing
In autumn the days become shorter, which is why the mountain tours should also be somewhat shorter. If you still want to plan longer tours, it is advisable to start earlier, in case of doubt rather turn back and also pack a headlamp or flashlight in your backpack.
The right clothes
As mentioned at the beginning, the weather in autumn can often be changeable. So you should be prepared for any weather condition and dress for it according to the onion principle. Also, at HWK we have the secret weapon for wet weather.
The HWK-Water-Shield is a water-repellent impregnation for sportswear and shoes, which brings so some advantages:
- restores the “beading effect” of water-repellent functional fabrics
- supports breathability and water- and dirt-repellent effect in tex-fabrics
- seals closed surface materials in footwear
- can be repeated as often as required when the water-repellent effect of a fabric wears off

Also bring enough food
In autumn, many alpine pastures are no longer managed. To avoid being thirsty and hungry in front of a closed hut, be sure to pack plenty of provisions.
With these tips, nothing will stand in the way of your fall hike, and with the HWK Water Shield in your hiking gear, you’ll stay dry even on wet days.
